Reside speaks with industry leaders at 2023 Village Summit

Reside’s Chief Operating Officer, Craig Syphers was invited as a panellist at the DCM Institute’s 2023 Village Summit.

Held at the Rydges Hotel in South Bank Brisbane, the Summit is a highly anticipated annual event for the retirement sector and industry professionals.

The panel themed, ‘through the looking glass’, discussed emerging trends in modern retirement living, covering the increase in care, supply and demand for retirement and adapting to growing needs.

DCM Group CEO and Moderator Christopher Baynes acknowledged Craig’s 25-year experience in the five-star hotel and hospitality sector as he explained how it has helped guide Reside’s unique resident-centric approach.

”Reside Communities is a boutique retirement village operator based in Southeast Queensland. Being a boutique operator allows us to be extremely hands-on in our villages, supporting our Village Managers and residents,” Craig said.

“We’ve taken a lot of great initiatives from the hotel industry and implemented them into our business and into the villages. Including technology both front and back of house. One example is the implementation of a Residents App which is heavily utilised across all of our villages. The residents and their families love it. The introduction of our Back of House technology such as Building Management systems ensures we are compliant in all aspects of our business and allows our Village Managers to spend more time with our residents.”

The discussion touched on the increasing need for retirement living as demand often exceeds supply. Craig said the villages have grown significantly over the last 12 months.

“As we’ve grown our villages, we’ve increased our staffing levels, we’ve had an overwhelmingly positive response to our recruitment programme.” he said.

“We’re a very young company. We purchased two villages in 2018, one of those being Samford Grove which this week, we complete a three-year building plan including over 100 homes and the stunning community facilities.”

“It’s a lovely story because Glen Brown (Reside CEO and Co-Founder)’s parents moved into Samford Grove two years ago now and unfortunately, we lost Glen’s dad a year ago. His mother Hazel is still living there, Hazel has just flourished in that environment. It’s been lovely to see.”

With construction underway on Brookland Robertson’s second stage, ‘The Banksia’, Craig also gave insights into Esperance’s second stage, Essence.

“At Brookland Robertson, we’ve built stage one with new facilities with construction of stage 2 ‘The Banksia now underway. The residents at Brookland Robertson are now enjoying 5-star facilities in their new Community Centre.
Then of course we have our 5-star vertical hotel style offering, Esperance Hope Island. We opened stage one, Esprit, in April this year with 76 luxurious homes and two floors of community facilities including a health and wellbeing floor. Construction of stage two has now commenced, this 200-million-dollar project will eventually comprise of 300 homes and showpiecing over a hectare of green space.”

Craig also shared details of Reside’s newest village, Fairway Carindale, which is set to open stage one in early-2024.

“With our first two buildings about to open and an amazing new golf club, we’re truly excited about this village. Fairway at Carindale will be the first of its kind in Australia, residents will enjoy 5-star community facilities, a brand-new golf club, golf simulators and putt-putt golf.  Residents will start moving into the 52 apartments and penthouses from February.”
