When you’ve got the Glass House Mountains on your doorstep, what better way to pass the time than a scenic stroll through nature?
At Maleny Grove, residents look forward to the monthly walking group, which takes them into the heart of the nearby Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve – 55 hectares of subtropical rainforest filled with all manner of plant and animal life.
The Stroll and Connect club has been running around six months, and members are accompanied on walks by our Village Manager Cathie MacLean and Kate Pieterse, our Nurse Concierge from the home and community service Five Good Friends.
It appeals to residents who want to add a little extra movement into their lives as well as to those who enjoy the beauty of the natural environment.
Cathie said it was lovely to get out and about in nature.
“The people who come along are not involved in a lot of other physical activities so it’s a nice opportunity for them to do some exercise and they really look forward to it,” she said.
“We have had instances where the walking has motivated people to join other exercises groups as well, which is really positive to see.
“As well as the physical benefits, walking is also great for mental health. People feel comfortable to share their stories when we’re walking along, which is really nice. It’s lovely to see the social connections forming as people walk and talk.”
It is well known that walking in later life offers a wide range of physical, mental, and social benefits. It’s a simple low-impact activity that can significantly improve quality of life, and can be adapted to almost any fitness level, with the ability to start slowly and gradually build endurance.
Benefits include improving cardiovascular bone, and joint health, boosting mobility and balance, as well as reducing stress and anxiety leading to a better night’s sleep – it’s a win-win!
Cathie said the group enjoyed relaxing at the end of the walk with a coffee and, of course, more chatting.
“It’s so nice to have morning tea looking out over the fabulous Glass House Mountains in the company of friends – we love it!” she added.
